Pinterest, a social network based on images, has revealed the top searches and trends by generation as we approach the holiday season.

According to the platform holiday-related searches in August were 43 times higher than last year. It seems that people are more excited to celebrate the holiday after a lockdown-filled 2020. Many turn to Pinterest for ideas and inspiration.

Pinterest has added a variety of new features to make shopping easier. Shoppers can shop through creators or select filtered searches to find more relevant product categories. Pinterest noted an increase in early shopping due supply chain delays, which is consistent with a rise in support for small businesses.

Pinterest’s most popular trends and gift ideas are divided into generations. It noted that Gen Z is drawn to aesthetics. According to reports, ‘Fairy Grunge’ was the most popular with a 362-fold increase in searches. The trend features flowing dresses that contrast with more Gothic elements. It also has a whimsical attitude throughout the search results. Black platform boots and goblincore sweatshirts were the most popular, a trend that has dominated Gen Z fashion for the past year.

The Millennials are opting for comfort. They search for ‘cozy sweater vest dresses and ‘comfy pajas’ as the top terms. These searches have been used 11 times more by Millennials than last year, likely due to their shift from work-from-home lifestyle. One item that was on the agenda was washable silk pajamas. This is a clear sign of the generation’s priorities.

On the other hand, Baby Boomers and Gen X were looking for more luxurious products. The top searches for Gen X included luxury handbags and pre-owned luxury watches for men. JW Anderson’s small, chain shoulder bag was also popular. The search for antique gold jewellery has increased 12 times in the Baby Boomer generation. Fake leather skirts, leather accessories and leather shoes were also very popular among the older generation.

The social media platform also covered houseware and beauty trends, further highlighting the differences between each generation. Baby Boomers and Gen X tended to search for products, while Millennials and Gen Z tended to focus on inspiring aesthetic terms. The younger generations were more influenced by farmhouse-inspired aesthetics, while others opted for modern minimalism.
