Pantone, the global authority on colour, has announced its color of the year in 2022 as Pantone 17-3938 Very Persi, a new shade periwinkle with violet undertone.

The colour was introduced as a symbol for the global zeitgeist. It is described as the “happiest, warmest of all blue hues”, with a feeling of newness that connects to the current landscape. Pantone observed the current period of isolation in the world, which suggests that standards and notions are shifting through the merging of digital and physical lives.

Leatrice Eiseman is the executive director of Pantone Colour Institute. She stated in a release that “As the world moves into a world full of unprecedented change,” the selection of Pantone 17-398 Very Peri offers a new perspective and vision to the beloved and trusted blue colour family. Pantone 17-3938 Very Peri combines the best of blues with a violet-red undertone. It displays a joyous, spritely-jovial attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courage and creative expression.

Pantone is particularly excited by the digital rising. The organisation says that digital design’s steady growth has created new virtual worlds that enable the exploration and creation a variety of colour possibilities. Pantone highlights gaming trends, metaverse developments, and digitalisation of art as examples of color trends that fuse the digital world with the real world.

“The Pantone Colour of the year reflects the changes taking place in global culture and expressing what people looking for that color can hope to answer,” Laurie Pressman, vice-president of the Pantone Colour Insitute in a press release. “Creating a brand new color for the first time ever in our Pantone Colour of Year education colour program reflects the global innovation that is taking place.”

She said, “As society continues recognizing colour as a crucial form of communication and a means to express and affect ideas and emotions, engage and connect with them, the complexity of the new red-violet-infused bleu hue highlights the vast possibilities that lie ahead of us.”

It has been seen on runways for previous seasons. This makes it more likely that its popularity will only increase in 2022. Pantone describes it as a “spontaneous color statement” that allows it to be used in apparel and fashion in a way that is both unexpected but harmonious. It encouraged experimentation and suggested that designers can explore its unique appearance through alternating materials.
