Lizzo released her single “Rumors” in collaboration with Cardi B last week. The song’s music video was also released. The visual has been viewed over 12,000,000 times worldwide since its release. However, there have been many hateful and fatphobic comments about the video over the weekend. Lizzo posted her views on the subject to Instagram Live: “It is fatphobic. It’s racist. It’s hurtful. I will not accept that you do this to Black women repeatedly, especially big Black girls. You just spread hatred on us if we don’t fit in the box you have for us. This is not cool.”

The Grammy Award-winning artist also stated to her fans that she doesn’t allow haters to get to her. Lizzo shared how hard she worked to create her music video and why she couldn’t bear the hateful comments. Cardi B also tweeted in support of Lizzo: “Rumors is doing great. Don’t try to make the song seem sexist by saying it isn’t. It is in the top 10 on all platforms. Callin’ her mammy a racist and body shaming is a cruel and inhumane act.”

Another tweet was added by her: “Regardless of your size, whether you are big or small, they will always try to make you feel insecure.” These are not nerds who look at the popular table. According to NBC, “mammy” is a racist caricature of a happy, black woman who was subservient to white people. Lizzo stated that “these people are probably the same people as mad when I’m hypersexual and the mammy trope has been completely desexualized.” It can’t be both true. “Make it clear. People are crazy to see a fat Black woman who makes pop music and is happy.”
