Jason Wu, a New York Fashion Week participant, returned to the catwalk with a glamorous, elegant collection that showcased the beauty and elegance of florals.
Jason Wu explained that this collection was inspired by the art and craft of craftsmanship, and the idea to work with his hands. He also used “innovative” dying techniques, natural fibres, and delicate florals as part of the Jason Wu house codes.
Wu collaborated in creating “brilliantly tranquil” cloudy, painterly floral effects with Cara Marie Piazza (fabric artist specialising in natural dyes).
These flowers were created by hand-dying florals with frozen roses, ranunculus and safflower. Bundle dyeing was used with cosmos and steamed roses, while cloudy pinks were created by hand sponging cochineal extract with logwood and Wu.
These floral effects were applied on natural fabrics, including memory cotton and washed-silk Habotai, and were highlighted in elegant silhouettes such as pleated dresses and separates, lace-adorned slips, and ballgowns that were destined for the red carpet.
Block colour styling was used to highlight the serene beauty of the flowers, including sheer knits, petal-like ruffles in skirts and babydoll dresses.
The brand also hired Emily Thompson to create a stunning floral catwalk installation that highlighted the collection’s beauty. Wu said that all materials used in the show will come “full circle” as they will be donated by Pratt Institute students and local dye artists.
